Immigrant Mentality

💬
I grew up in an immigrant neighborhood. We just knew the rule was you’re going to have to work twice as hard. — Lin-Manuel Miranda

More accurate, when I say Immigrant Mentality, I’m talking Joey Diaz going on a rant about that crazy immigrant hustle on the Joe Rogan Experience. There’s something about uprooting yourself from where you were born and raised — the only life you know, in order to search for new opportunities in an unfamiliar world. Not knowing the language or customs, the fight-or-flight mode is constantly on with immigrants and while others merely have a hunger that enables them to thrive, immigrants are in survival mode.

Especially when they are refugees, like my parents who fled the war in Afghanistan. Leaving everything behind and going through an arduous journey that resulted in the death of my sister, once my parents and siblings set foot in America, the drive they had to make sure ends were met is a stark comparison to any average middle class family that was born and raised in the US with the assumption that opportunities are always there for the taking when they feel like it.
